In his second year with Taste of the NFL, Chef Tory McPhail of Commander’s Palace in New Orleans is excited to bring the Party with a Purpose to the Big Easy. We recently caught up with McPhail who just returned from Israel where he had the opportunity to travel with the Jewish Federation of New Orleans as part of a cultural tour of the country.
Q: How was Israel?
A: Israel was amazing!! The people, the food, the wine and the culture were spectacular and well beyond expectation. There were about 20 of us that traveled together for 10 days checking out the best restaurants, hotels and wineries.
Q: What was a highlight of your trip?
A: One of the highlights was certainly the spice markets and open air shopping areas in Nazareth and Jerusalem.
Q: How did you get involved with Taste of the NFL?
A: I had the opportunity to be involved with Taste of the NFL last year in Indy for the first time. I’ve known Wayne Kostroski (founder of Taste of the NFL) for several years now and have had the opportunity to work with him at Taste of Derby since 2010.
Q: Did anything surprise you at the event last year?
A: The biggest surprise at both Taste of the NFL and Taste of Derby is how much fun everyone has once the events begin. There is certainly lots of work that goes into planning and executing these big parties; however, Wayne has surrounded himself with excellent people that are very very good at what they do.
Q: Why should people attend the Party with a Purpose?
A: It is not only great fun, but it feels good to do well by your community and raise much needed money for Second Harvest Food Bank and to help kick hunger across America.
Q: What restaurants should visitors eat at in New Orleans—besides Commanders, Sobu and Café Adelaide of course?!
A: New Orleans is such a great food town and if you've eaten in our restaurants already, there are so many other restaurants that you should have on your list. Some of my favorites right now are Emerils, Restaurant August, Dantes Kitchen, Patois, and La Petit Grocery.
Q: Should people make reservations now for Commander’s Palace during Super Bowl week?
A: People should make plans soon for their stay while here in New Orleans for the Super Bowl. We are releasing dates soon for reservations so people can check back into Commanderspalace.com for availability or call 504-899-6660 to speak to a reservationist
Q: What do you want visitors to know about NOLA when they visit for Super Bowl?
A: New Orleans is such a unique town that people should plan to come a few days early, or take an extra few days after to soak in what the NEW New Orleans has to offer. If you haven’t been here in a while you’re missing out on a younger generation that’s making their mark in this historic city. So come on down and rest for a spell ~ You'll be glad you did!!!
