Taste of the NFL Raises Funds to Provide 4 Million Meals

More than 2,500 guests joined culinary stars and NFL players to raise funds for hunger relief at 22nd Annual Party with a Purpose.
Minneapolis, MN (11-Feb-2013)

Taste of the NFL, a Twin Cities-based, non-profit organization dedicated to kicking hunger in America, announces its annual Super Bowl party generated funds to provide more than 4 million meals to feed the hungry. The 22nd annual Party with a Purpose® took place on Saturday, Feb. 2 in New Orleans—site of Super Bowl XLVII. More than 2,500 guests attended the sold-out event to sample specialty foods from each NFL city, meet current, Pro Hall of Famer and alumni NFL players and enjoy the music of Soul Asylum.

Since 1992, Taste of the NFL has raised money in support of food banks throughout the United States through its annual Super Bowl fundraiser. Proceeds from this year’s event will be distributed among food banks in each NFL city nationwide with 30 percent staying in the Super Bowl host city to go to Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans and Acadiana.

“We are thankful to our numerous partners and the guests who helped make the 22nd annual Party with a Purpose a success,” said Wayne Kostroski, founder of Taste of the NFL. “While there is still much work to be done in the effort to kick hunger, we are extremely proud of this year’s efforts which will result in the donation of more than 4 million meals to food banks in NFL cities nationwide.”

In addition to funds raised from ticket sales, proceeds were generated from a silent auction, a raffle for a pair of game tickets and a 14K White Gold Pave Diamond Necklace (worn and promoted all evening by 2013 Miss America Mallory Hagan). There was also a competition among the NFL players, a Helmet Auction. Each player had a helmet and other team amenities at their food station, and the player who raised the most money for their team station secured an additional match for their winning bid that would go directly to the food bank in the NFL city they represent. Andy Russell, former linebacker for the Pittsburgh Steelers, won the Helmet Auction again this year, and for the fourth year in a row! His winning amount of $4,000 will be matched by Taste of the NFL, allowing a total donation of $8,000 to go to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.

Other highlights for this year’s Taste of the NFL event included appearances by 2013 Miss America Mallory Hagan, Chef Andrew Zimmern of Travel Channel’s Bizarre Foods, and stars from TLC’s Cake Boss. Special guests in attendance included Gayle King of CBS This Morning, Jenna Wolfe of The TODAY Show, celebrity chef Lorena Garcia, Biff Henderson of the Late Show with David Letterman and Omar Benson Miller of CSI Miami.

The 2013 event was made possible through the generosity of Taste of the NFL partners including E & J Gallo, Party City, Uptown Network and American Family Insurance. Additional supporting sponsors include the Louisiana Seafood Council, Tabasco, Pernod Ricard and Crescent Crown Distributing.
