Debbie Gold is a James Beard-winning chef who was the only person in her family passionate about food and cooking. While still in high school, she began creating impressive meals for her family. Such early endeavors paid off.
Gold went on to study restaurant management at the University of Illinois, L’Ecole Hoteliere de Tain L’Hermitage, and apprenticed at Michelin-starred French restaurants. Returning to Chicago in 1987, she worked at the world-renowned Charlie Trotter’s and has been the pastry chef at Everest Restaurant.
When she learned that Kansas City’s American Restaurant was in need of a chef, she jumped at the chance. Esquire named her “Chef to Watch” in 1997 and in 1999 she won the James Beard Foundation Best Chef: Midwest.
Her work at 40 Sardines was a continuation of Gold’s culinary journey. The food and the setting were welcoming and warm. This winning combination made 40 Sardines an extremely appealing dining destination!
